Midori Takada live in Athens
Midori Takada (Sold Out)
2 June 2019
Parnassos Hall
21:30
Midori Takada is a masterful Japanese composer and percussionist whose output over the past 40 years weaves through solo, group and theatrical practices.
Her deep quests into traditional Asian and African percussive language are captured on a series of now highly sought after albums including her masterpiece Through The Looking Glass (1981/RCA) and her collaboration with Masahiko Satoh Lunar Cruise (1990/Epic-Sony), the former reissued by WRWTFWW/Palto Flats and the latter, reissued by WRWRFWW in 2017.
In chime with the peak period ambient and Fourth World musics explored by Jon Hassell, Don Cherry and Brian Eno, but born of a distinctly Japanese ceremonial and meditative musical sensibility, her work has a crystalline quality that distills rhythms from around the world into minimalist instrumental dreamscapes.
To coincide with the reissues she has made a triumphant return to concert hall and festival stages worldwide including sold out performances at London Barbican, Paris Palais de Tokyo and Berlin Hebbel am Ufer. She has established a peerless reputation for her theatrical and deeply spiritual minimalist percussion performances, where virtuoso technique, acoustic sensibility, choreographed lighting and movement combine to create a completely unique and transformative listening experience for audiences.
Most recently she collaborated with Lafawndah on the EP/video piece Le Renaud Bleu, her first new music in 20 years.

The Master Of Continuous Piano
Minimalism at its most lush and ornate’— Pitchfork
“Another staggering accomplishment from a man who has taken the possibilities of composition and improvisation to new heights, fusing the fervor he strives to endure as a performer with the promise of creating an expansive sonic landscape for his audience that’s teeming with life and bounding with possibility’ — Tiny Mix Tapes
Lubomyr Melnyk is one of the most extraordinary pianists and composers of our day.
He has been called The Prophet Of The Piano because of his life-long devotion to the instrument, and for his work in pushing the boundaries of what can be done with it. In the mid-1970s, while living in Paris, he created Continuous Music – a totally new language for the piano, one that requires amazing technical abilities that use the full natural voice of the piano.
One can recognise immediately that this music is founded in the traditional Classical piano technique – with reminiscences of Liszt and Brahms – but it also introduced many influences from Eastern philosophy, as well as minimal music, combining these into a wonderful mixture of modern romantic harmonies and melodies.
Using his extraordinary piano abilities to generate over 19.5 notes per second in each hand, he is the fastest pianist ever recorded. Since the early 1970s he has produced an astonishing oeuvre of more than 120 works, most for solo or double piano, and has blazed wholly new paths in contemporary music.

Nils Frahm had an early introduction to music, learning the piano throughout his childhood. It was through this that Nils began to immerse himself in the styles of classical pianists from previous generations as well as the music of contemporary composers, before forging his own musical path through composition.
Today Nils Frahm continues to work as an accomplished composer, producer and celebrated performer from his Berlin-based studio at the renowned Funkhaus. His unconventional approach to an age-old instrument, played contemplatively and intimately, and on a mesmerising scale through his vast stage shows, has won him many fans around the world. Nils has gained global notoriety for his highly developed sense of control and restraint in his work, as well as a breath-taking level of emotion and personality.
Following on from his first solo piano works “Wintermusik” and “The Bells” in 2009, and 2010’s “7fingers” in collaboration with cellist Anne Müller, 2011 saw his break-through album “Felt” on Erased Tapes. Created by placing felt on the hammers of the piano, the record defines Frahm’s signature sound which was a further development of the two-track experiment Unter/Über. “Felt” was followed by his solo synthesiser EP “Juno” and “Wonders” — a record by Oliveray, his duo project with long-time musical companion Peter Broderick. Nils then recorded the 2012 works “Screws” while recovering from a thumb injury, which he gifted to his fans on his birthday. Erased Tapes also released Juno Reworked featuring remixes by Luke Abbott and Clark.
2013 saw Nils return with his new album Spaces to critical acclaim, expressing his love for experimentation and answering the call from his fans for a record that truly reflects what they have witnessed during his live shows. Recorded over a period of two years the album captured live performances from various of his concerts worldwide. Nils also released his first music book in the same year, “Sheets Eins”, publishing the sheet music for tracks such as “Ambre” and “Said” and “Done” for the very first time.
In 2015 Nils launched “Piano Day”, an official global body created by Nils and his closest friends to celebrate the piano via various innovative, piano-related projects around the world. The first project revealed by the Piano Day team was the building of the world’s tallest piano: the Klavins 450. It was on the slightly smaller version built by piano inventor David Klavins that Nils recorded eight improvised piano motifs in one sitting, which formed his “Solo” album – presented to the world on the first celebration of Piano Day.
During the same year Nils’ first film score release Music For The Motion Picture Victoria written for the one-take feature film by Sebastian Schipper, won the esteemed German Film Prize for Best Soundtrack; the soundtrack opens with an edit of “Burn With Me” by German producer DJ Koze. And in the Summer, the BBC Proms presented a memorable performance at London’s prestigious Royal Albert Hall curated by BBC 6 Music radio presenter Mary Anne Hobbs.

Terry Riley & Gyan Riley live in Athens
Terry Riley & Gyan Riley (US)
Wednesday, December 4, 2019
Parnassos Hall
21:30
We are presenting a full-length program of Terry’s music: intricate and often improvisational structures containing elements of minimalism, jazz, ragtime, and North Indian raga, the combination of which have defined Terry’s diverse and prolific career.
Minimalist pioneer Terry Riley was among the most revolutionary composers of the postwar era; famed for his introduction of repetition into Western music motifs, he also masterminded early experiments in tape loops and delay systems which left an indelible mark on the experimental music produced in his wake.
“Nothing I have done in this life has given me more satisfaction than improvising on these songs with Gyan. Nothing I have done can match the intuitive synchronicity we have shared many times on the stage. Gyan supplies a brilliant counterpoint to the strands and moods of these pieces always surprising me with a virtuosity that serves and energizes his musical invention. I could not have dreamed up a better marriage of mind and spirit than this collaboration.” – Terry Riley
